Reservation Form & Directions
AACRL will hold its annual dinner meeting on Wednesday, April 20th, at Mauby's
Restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama. In addition to a short business meeting, Dr.
Bill Nelson, Library Director at Augusta State University, will be the keynote
speaker. His presentation topic is "How Should Academic Libraries Address the
Requirements of the SACS Principles of Accreditation?" He will briefly explain
why the new SACS document is a challenge for academic libraries, suggest a
strategy for compliance, and address opportunities for library contributions to
student learning outcomes.
About the Speaker
Dr. Bill Nelson is Professor and Library Director at Augusta State University
in Augusta, Georgia. He has also served as library director at Mobile College
now the University of Mobile (1974-1982), Carson-Newman College (1982-1985), and
Samford University (1985-1993).
Dr. Nelson received a B.A. in English and a B.A. in History from Centenary
College of Louisiana. He received a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Latin American Studies
and a M.L.S. from Louisiana State University.
Dr. Nelson's research and publication interests include ALA and ACRL standards,
SACS accreditation, and the GALILEO Project (Georgia's virtual library). He served
as Chair of the ACRL College Libraries Section Standards Committee which produced
the 2000 edition of the Standards for College Libraries. He was appointed to the
ACRL College and Research Libraries Standards Task Force which developed a common
set of standards for all types of libraries in higher education called the Standards
for Libraries in Higher Education. He also served as Chair of the ACRL Committee
on the Status of Academic Librarians and was a member of the Task Force on Academic
Library Outcomes Assessment. He was recently appointed Chair of the new ACRL
Guidelines for Media Resources in Academic Libraries Review Task Force.
About the Dinner
The AACRL dinner meeting will be held at Mauby's Restaurant in Birmingham on
Wednesday, April 20th, at 6:00 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

"Recently remodeled by Richard Tubb, and nestled in beautiful Mountain Brook,
loyal clientele of Mauby's delight in the quaint neighborhood charm and consistently
creative cuisine. The menu changes daily with hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, lamb,
pork, and chicken entrees served with a French Cajun flair. Patrons enjoy the casual
sophistication of the main dining area or a more relaxed atmosphere on the garden
deck featuring a wood burning fireplace during colder months."

The dinner will include a tossed garden salad, an entrée with side items and
bread, a dessert, and a non-alcoholic beverage. Alcoholic beverages may be
purchased at your expense at the bar.

Mauby's Baked Stuffed Chicken (boneless chicken breast stuffed with feta cheese,
mushrooms, spinach, scallions, and herbs served with lemon cream sauce)

Pasta Primavera (vegetarian)

Those interested in attending must complete one of the reservation forms below by
Monday, April 11th. (You do not need to be a member of AACRL to attend.) The cost
of the dinner and program is $40.00.

Mauby's Restaurant is located at 121 Oak Street in Crestline Village in the Mountain
Brook area of Birmingham.
Directions: From the Sheraton Hotel, take Richard Arrington Jr Boulevard North
towards the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center. Turn right onto 24th Street North
which becomes 24th Street South. At the fork after University Boulevard, go left
to continue onto 26th Street South which becomes Niazuma Avenue then Pawnee Avenue
then Country Club Road then Montclair Road. From Montclair Road, turn right onto
Memory Lane. (This road is not well-marked. It is the first traffic light after
the Pilgrim Congregational Church. Look for a right turn lane, a street sign on
the left side of the road for Morningside Drive, and a post office on the corner.)
When Memory Lane forks, go left onto Euclid Avenue. Turn right onto Church Street
(clock tower) and immediately turn right onto Oak Street. The restaurant is located
by the Emmet O'Neal Library.
