2004 AACRL Annual Meeting Information

AACRL will hold its annual dinner meeting on Wednesday, April 21, at the Silver Spoon a la Carte Café in Montgomery. In addition to a brief business meeting, Dr. Fred M. Heath, vice provost and director of general libraries at The University of Texas at Austin, will be the keynote speaker. His presentation is entitled "The Academic Library in a Digital World: Problems and Possibilities."

About the Speaker

Prior to moving to UTA in 2003, Heath served as dean of libraries at Texas A&M for ten years. Heath, who also was appointed professor in the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin, holds the Sterling C. Evans Endowed Chair at Texas A&M. He was director of libraries at Texas Christian University from 1987 to 1993 and from 1980-87 was dean of library services at the University of North Alabama.

Heath is president of the Association of Research Libraries and is convener of the Texas A&M University Council of Deans. He was president of the Big 12 Plus Library Consortium in 1998-99 and president of the Texas Council of State University Librarians in 1998-2000.

Heath received his doctor's degree in education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, his master's degree in library science from Florida State University, his master of arts degree with emphasis in Russian history from University of Virginia and his bachelor of arts degree from Tulane University. Heath will also be the speaker at the ALLA/CUS breakfast on April 22.

About the Dinner

The AACRL dinner meeting will be held at the Silver Spoon a là Carte Café in Montgomery on Wednesday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m. Appetizers and Blossom Tea will be served as guests arrive and mingle at 7:00 p.m., with dinner being served at 7:30 p.m.

According to APT's "Gridiron Gourmet," Leslie Bailey, owner of the Silver Spoon, is Alabama's "five star" chef: "Leslie's cooking style demands for the experience to be simple, delicious, and above all fun. . . ."

Bailey owns Silver Spoon Caterers and the restaurant Silver Spoon a la Carte, both in Montgomery, Alabama. She also hosts a weekly segment entitled What's Cooking with Leslie? on the local NBC affiliate's 5:00 PM newscast. She has also hosted two Alabama Public Television cooking marathons, Desserts Southern Style and Casseroles Southern Style, and has been a Montgomery, Alabama radio personality for more than 21 years. In 1994, Bailey received a Special Achievement Award from the US Small Business Administration, and in 1993 received an Emerging Award from the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. That same year, she was named National Small Business of the Year. Bailey also serves on the boards of Montgomery AIDS Outreach, the Janis Capilouto Center for the Deaf, the Alabama Restaurant Association, the Montgomery YMCA, and FAME, the support organization for Booker T. Washington Magnet School for the Performing Arts Board Member. Her numerous community theatre performances include Godspell, Carousel, Showboat and Man of LaMancha.

Those interested in attending must complete one of the reservation forms below by April 12th. The cost of the program will be $40.00, which will include a five-course gourmet dinner (see menu below) A vegetarian alternative will be provided upon request (on the reservation form).

The Silver Spoon is located in a bistro-type facility at 222 North McDonough Street, approximately 0.6 miles from the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Montgomery. The Embassy Suites Hotel is the convention hotel for the Alabama Library Association 2004 Convention, which is scheduled for April 20-23.

Directions: From Embassy Suites at 300 Tallapoosa Street, go 0.2 mi. to Commerce Street. Bear right onto West Jefferson Street for 0.1 mi. Continue on East Jefferson Street for 0.2 mi. and turn right onto McDonough Street. The Silver Spoon is located at 222 North McDonough Street.
